This is the first up in my set of Lolita themed background ponies. I'm really inexperienced with foliage and nature elements in general so this was a lot of firsts for me. I experimented with a lot of things in this one and I learned quite a bit
At a first glance, I find this to be pretty breathtaking. The lighting puts a clear emphasis to where I should be looking. Your way of shading with very cool shadows and the way you've done the hair and folds on clothing seems to create a lot of life in this image.
I'm also pretty new to foliage, but I think I might have a few thoughts. I see that there are basically two colors in your grass. To me, these brush strokes look a bit like literal grass. What I think might be throwing us off is that there is so much space between each literal blade of grass. I know we're both fairly new to foliage but yeah...
We could also consider coloring the grass a different color from the trees or bushes. To make them easier to differentiate.
The river feels a bit overdone as the waves are very, very dense. Whenever I have been referencing water to try to understand it, at this scale, the surface of the water ought to be much smoother with very clear waves. I also think adding reflections of tree canopies in the water by adding greens lines to indicate waves could make the water feel more convincing, but I don't know how that would turn out.
While I think your anatomy is very commendable, I feel that BonBon's front leg which isn't holding the Cherry doesn't look natural. I think it would look more natural if her fetlock was bent back instead of being bent forward as if that leg was standing. Lyra's back hoof looks bigger than other hooves. It may be worth considering that the facial anatomy may look vaguely dog-like to some. I don't find the faces to be overly dog-like to start resembling the wrong animal too much, but that could probably be avoided by having a lower jaw a shape comparable to that of Luna and Celestia.
What kinda throws me off is the shading on the cherry which BonBon is holding. For some reason I'm expecting Lyra blocking out the sun so the Cherry wouldn't be shaded like this. IMO, since there's so much visual weight to that little cherry, it really messes with my perception of depth.
Of course, I feel that there's plenty of merit in a number of things, but for me, the foreleg, cherry, the grass and maybe the water doesn't feel perfect.
Okay, this is my first critique on Deviantart, so please bare with it (I'm better at giving critique to written works).
Lets start with the general concept - while femalexfemale is not specifically what I'm searching for, I must admit the oucome of this one is quite becoming; the background and lighting give the feeling of serenity, especially that beam of light that squeezes through the tree tops onto Lyra and... not sure who the other is, I'd be guessing Rarity. There is a romantic quality to the setting as a whole and I believe you captured that splendidly.
As few things are REALLY original these days, it's hard to rate any work in that regard; I could think of a bunch of titles that use a similar "formula" to this one, but if rated for feeling this is certainly one of the better ones I came across - although not direfctly striking, the peaceful tone of the art kinda slips into you, if ever so slightly. Very few artworks these days can claim to have a similar effect, so...
I'm not well-versed in the art of drawing, so it would be hard for me to say anything constructive about your technique; I can, however, say that the final effect turned out great: the shading really gives an impression this is a middle of the day with a forest with widely-spread tree tops and I believe the "feel" of the picture that you were going for manages to capture it. In the end, if the technique isn't flawed and the goal is achieved, then what difference does the technique used actually makes?
As I continuously mentioned above - the impact of the pic creeps up on you; it doesn't strike you right off, rather gently flows into, a fact that fits the concept perfectly in my opinion. And, while the overall impact may not be as "grand", those who can measure it by the message of the art in stead of general rules can surely appreciate the way this drawing affects their emotions as they gaze upon it.
Overall I'd say you did a fine piece of work and while the pony models themselves are slightly off (compared to the source material), they fit well with the concept and the rest of the pic, making the drawing a nice, cohensive whole.
I love it when the time people invest in their backgrounds shows as well as it does in this. Honestly, it would be so full of amazingness even without the ponies
